Senior Sergeant Stu Koefoed of Nelson Police said that local police had another busy day this time dealing with drunken drivers.

"This morning Nelson Police processed 37 drink drivers in just 4 hours on the Maitai Valley Road. The vast majority of these drink drivers were young males 16-20 years old, all of whom were staying at the Maitai motor camp. This is very disappointing as we had a strong and overt presence here, as in previous years, and all the youths at the camp were aware of our presence and had other transport options yet still decided to take the risk and drive. Additionally a number of these drink drivers were accompanied by sober, licensed passengers."

Over the last 24 hour period Nelson Bays Police have processed 53 drink drivers all of whom will be appearing in Court within the next 2 weeks.

Senior Sergeant Koefoed said that police would continue to focus their enforcement efforts in this area and hoped that young drivers would finally get the message not to drive after they had been drinking.
