Residents of Whakatane west (Poroporo area) are delighted with the boost in water pressure and flow following completion of a water supply system upgrade in the area recently.

Water pressure and flow rates have improved in the Whakatane west after the completion of the first stage of water supply upgrade with the installation of 90mm diameter water pipes along Mill and Paroa roads.

The new bigger pipes replace the 50mm diameter pipes that were failing to cope with high demand especially during the summer period.

Whakatane District Council Director of Works and Services Haydn Read says the residents should notice a significant change in the water pressure and flow.

“Historically we have had problems with coping with the high demand and low pressure in the area. We hope residents will be pleased with the new water flow rates and pressure that the upgrade now delivers”.

Paroa resident Barbara Brown says she is happy with the new water pressure and flow especially during the summer period when there is a high demand on the system due to irrigation in the area.

“The improved pressure and flow is a welcome relief. It’s certainly a lot more relaxing to take a shower now“, she added.

The Council’s Utilities Manager Santha Agas said the second phase of the water supply upgrade project which will upgrade the pipes in Paroa Rd is set to start in 2012.
