Surf Lifeguards have rescued over 830 people and volunteered over 135,800 hours so far this summer to help make our beaches a safer place – but will still find time to go head to head at the Lion Foundation Surf League at Mount Maunganui this weekend.

As the ultimate battle for ocean supremacy looms - Surf Life Saving’s elite athletes are preparing for battle to take out the prestigious Surf League title. Each competitor has been nominated by their region as an elite contender and will play a major role in vying for their region to dominate the competition – with all 171 competitors looking to impress New Zealand coach Scott Bartlett while he looks to select the 12-strong New Zealand squad that will travel to Egypt in October.

“Sport plays an important role in Surf Life Saving’s membership programme and The Lion Foundation Surf League provides the opportunity for New Zealand’s top Surf Athletes to combine world-class sporting prowess with essential lifeguarding skills. These guards are at the top of their game which makes for an extremely action-packed weekend – and results in exceptionally fit and skilled lifeguards patrolling our beaches,” said Grant Florence, chief executive, Surf Life Saving New Zealand.

Taranaki took out the top title last year, with Canterbury coming a close second and Auckland not far behind in third place.

Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Taranaki, Hawkes Bay, Wellington and Canterbury will compete for the ultimate title from 12pm – 3.30pm on Sunday 14h February at Main Beach, Mt Maunganui.
