WAINUIOMATA

Hutt City’s Pelorus Trust Music in Parks series continues full steam ahead with a performance from award-winning hip-hop and R&B act Nesian Mystik at Frederick Wise Park in Wainuiomata.

Concert goers are in for a treat as they will hear material from the guys latest album Elevator Musiq as well as playing their well proven favourites on the night.

Nesian Mystik’s blend of Pasifika-infused R&B and hip-hop has won them an international following. The six-member group was founded in the music room of Auckland’s Western Springs College in 1999 as a cultural mix of Polynesia, bringing together Maori, Tongan, Samoan and Cook Island ancestry. Their infectious blend of music, beats and rhymes has been inspired by what is close to them, drawing on their cultures and families for inspiration, as well as being a humorous take on hip-hop culture.

Their 2002 album Polysaturated went four times platinum and they have had major success in the New Zealand music scene picking up NZ Music Awards for their work.

Nesian Mystik will be joined by pac-blues (Pacific Blues) duo Cydel and local Petone based reggae and roots group Hikioikoi.

David Letoa and Saipele Nili lead the exciting ensemble of Cydel, providing a wonderful soul, pac-blues (Pacific blues) performance. Cydel's consummate musicianship and emotional rendering of their songs is an unforgettable experience. As icons of the South Auckland music community, the group spent their youth at the local music centre honing their craft and performing at every neighbourhood event going.

Being self-taught musicians who write, produce and record their own music, Cydel take great pleasure in creating sounds for Soul and R&B devotees.

Cydel are no strangers to performing or the mainstream, with appearances on Top Of The Pops, Tangata Pasifika, Mai Time, as well as live gigs at WOMAD, many Pasifika Festivals and Style Pasifika.

Hikoikoi are hometown favourites with a unique combination of roots-fuelled reggae, dramatic soul-flavoured vocals and a hint of jazz. Their self titled debut album reached number 4 on the nationwide Independent Music Charts in New Zealand.

The 3-piece group comprises of vocalist/guitarist Paul Wickham, keyboardist James Coyle aka Reverend Black Keys and Ben Wood on drums.

Over the early summer of 2010 Hikoikoi toured the North Island performing alongside the likes of the Black Seeds and Cornerstone Roots.

The Pelorus Trust Music in Parks finishes on another high note with Little Bushman, Good Laika and Mercury Crowe on 28 February on TheNewDowse lawn.

Music in Parks is proudly supported by Hutt City Council, Pelorus Trust, The Radio Network, the Hutt News and Tip Top.
