A female spectator was struck by a ball off a Brendon McCullum six during yesterday's One Day Cricket International at AMI Stadium. The woman was immediately taken to Christchurch hospital for observation.

New Zealand Cricket chief executive, Justin Vaughan, said he had been in contact with the hospital today.

"We have been advised by the CDHB that the woman is still in hospital and is in a comfortable condition,” he said.

"On behalf of New Zealand Cricket and the BLACKCAPS team I would like to offer her our greatest sympathy and wish her a speedy recovery.

"Brendon himself is understandably concerned and will be in contact with the woman when appropriate.”

Vaughan said that yesterday’s event reinforced the need for match-day safety messages.

"Yesterday was an extremely rare and unfortunate occurrence. Balls are being hit harder, further and more frequently than ever in cricket these days. It is in the nature of cricket that balls are sometimes hit into the crowd, and I urge people to remember this when they attend matches and to remain alert at all times.”
