ROTORUA

At about 12.30am on the 25 February, 2010 Rotorua Police attended a single vehicle crash on Te Ngae Road, Rotorua.

The male driver (aged 18 years) has died as a result of this crash, while three other passengers escaped with minor injury.

Acting Senior Sergeant Andrew Lynch says it appears that the driver has been travelling at a very high speed along Te Ngae road in a northerly direction, passing a number of vehicles.

"The car was travelling on the wrong side of the road as it approached the intersection of a Te Ngae and Owhata Roads. The car has struck a raised traffic island. Due to the speed the car was travelling, the driver has lost control of his vehicle and rolled several times."

Acting Senior Sergeant Lynch says the Police road policing strategy focuses on the Fatal Five - speeding, alcohol, restraints, dangerous driving and high risk drivers; these factors are the largest contributors to crash on our roads.

"All Fatal Five were present at this crash," he says.

"Police make no apology for the vigorous enforcement that is undertaken in an effort to reduce the trauma on our roads.

"Ensuring the safety of all road users in Rotorua is a high priority for Police, and we will continue to maintain a high level of Police visibility on our streets in an effort to achieve this."

The deceased has not yet been named.
