After challenging New Zealand to get growing in 2008 in a bid to convert non-gardeners to grow their own food, Lynda Hallinan is bringing her knowledge and enthusiasm to the Kāpiti Coast.

Lynda is the editor of New Zealand Gardener magazine and is currently appearing on our television screens as the presenter of Get Growing on Prime. Filmed this summer, Get Growing takes a novice gardening family through the trials and tribulations of setting up a backyard vege patch.

In 2007, Lynda famously set herself the goal of being self-sufficient in inner-city Auckland by growing all her own fresh fruit and vegetables – and bartering, trading and swapping with other growers to supplement her crops. She vowed to spend no more than $10 a week on basics at the supermarket.

Lynda is a guest speaker at the Kāpiti Coast Sustainable Home and Garden Show. She will talk about her experiences of being self-sufficient on a city section, how to garden on a budget, how to save seeds, and top vegetable, berry and fruit varieties for autumn planting in a lower North Island climate.

Kāpiti Coast District Council Show spokesperson Ben Thompson says having Lynda at the Show will benefit a lot of people, not just gardeners. “Her gardening knowledge and enthusiasm in helping people live a more sustainable life is contagious.”

The Kāpiti Coast Sustainable Home and Garden Show on 27 and 28 March 2010 is expected to attract thousands of visitors seeking a more eco-friendly lifestyle.
