Plan a special candlelight dinner party for the last Saturday in March and show your support for planet Earth.

From 8.30-9.30pm on Saturday 27 March, lights will be switched off around the world as people participate in Earth Hour – a global initiative by the World Wide Fund for Nature.

Earth Hour encourages people to switch off their non-essential lights and appliances for an hour in the hope that people will ‘switch on’ to reducing their energy use.

Franklin District Council Mayor Mark Ball says he hopes Franklin’s households and businesses support this initiative, as they did last year.

“Come on Franklin – show your support for Earth Hour. It’s a fun thing to do and a great way to spend some quality time with family or friends. Turn off your lights, televisions and play stations for a while. By raising awareness of our need to reduce energy use through this event, it will show that every one of us can make changes.”

Franklin District Council will be turning off all non-essential lighting in civic buildings to support Earth Hour.

Over 40 councils around NZ have committed to Earth Hour, with 72 countries taking part.
