Teams of 12 students will be jumping hurdles to do the Police 'PCT Challenge' (physical competency test) at a special launch this Thursday.

The challenge puts teams on a time-trialed obstacle course used to test the fitness of Police and recruits. It's being used as a group challenge aimed at boosting teamwork and confidence in students to complete a challenge. It's also a chance for them to meet the Police who work in their communities.

Porirua College and Otaki College will be the first to pit their skills against each other on launch day, which celebrates the completion in construction of a replica PCT course.

The test has become so popular at local college events that replica testing equipment has been specially made to cope with demand.

Community Constable Peer Nielsen says, “Porirua Youth Aid staff used to
attend some college events and would borrow the PCT equipment used to test Police. Because of its growing popularity we decided to get a replica made up so we could attend more events.

"We had outstanding support from Nick Hall and Shayne Warren of Whitireia Polytechnic in constructing pieces for the course. Wayne Sheard from the Welding School in Tawa was instrumental in getting the steel frames made and Justin Douglas-Cox from The Learning Shop was also fantastic in helping getting in contact with these organisations."

Constable Nielsen says the team focus means every member helps their group towards victory. The course aims to build confidence in young people and helps them enjoy teamwork.

"This is not about winning through individual effort - it's about working together as a team to achieve goals. Each team member is valuable in helping the team get across the finish line.

"Taking part is always really fun for the students and it's good to see them enjoying the exercise. Now that we have our own set of equipment we can hold a few more challenges!"

The course equipment will get even more of a local flavour by displaying artwork by young people on course equipment and advertising local businesses on the trailer sides. Advertising income will go directly to the trailer's maintenance and warrant of fitness fees.

"We're very excited to have the equipment ready for a launch," says Constable Nielsen. "We're looking forward to seeing lots of people on the day and hope more students will be inspired to get their own teams together!"

Organisations wishing to have the PCT Challenge at their event can make arrangements through the Porirua Police Community Base.
