Fatal crash Blenheim

Blenheim Police are investigating a fatal crash which occurred about 9.45 pm on Friday night the 19th March 2010.

The crash occurred at a roundabout at the intersection of Hutcheson and Nelson Streets, just outside the CBD.

Two vehicles with single female occupants were involved. One of the vehicles had been stopped at a Police alcohol checkpoint in Alfred Street approximately 400 metres from the crash site. Before being able to carry out any breath alcohol screening test; the female driver of the vehicle accelerated away from the checkpoint.

Police at the checkpoint attempted to follow the vehicle which went out of sight before they could signal it to stop.

On following the vehicle in the direction that it left the checkpoint Police discovered that it had crashed into another vehicle attempting to negotiate the roundabout.

Police who arrived on the scene went to the aid of the female occupant of the second vehicle but discovered that she had suffered fatal injuries.

The scene remains cordoned off overnight and the scene will be examined by the Serious Crash Unit on Saturday.

Police have spoken to a number of people in the area at the time and would ask members of the public who have any information about the crash to contact the Blenheim Police Station.
