Police have just lifted cordons in place on several roads in Tokoroa while gas workers dealt with a ruptured gas main.
The area affected was to the west of the main highway, between the railway line and Papanui Street, and extended from Baird Road to Bridge Street.
Residents in up to 200 homes were evacuated as a precaution although a steady breeze effectively dispersed the escaping gas.
The leak was reported at 11.40am and is believed to have been caused by workmen digging at the intersection of Papanui and Noel Streets.
Residents are free to return to their homes.
