Governor-General to attend de Carle Lectures

The Governor-General of New Zealand, Hon Sir Anand Satyanand, and Susan, Lady Satyanand will attend the de Carle Lectures at the University of Otago on Tuesday 30 March and Wednesday 31 March. Professor John Barclay, Lightfoot Professor of Divinity at Durham University, will speak about the Apostle Paul as a subversive thinker in the ancient world.

The de Carle Lectures result from a generous bequest to the University of Otago in 1946, from Miss Edith Isabelle de Carle of Dunedin. The bequest is used to bring distinguished scholars in the Humanities to the University of Otago for periods of between two and six months, during which they provide a short series of lectures open to the public. The first de Carle Lecturer was Lord Beveridge, and many eminent scholars have been appointed over the years.

Susan, Lady Satyanand is a relative of the de Carle family. Other relatives will also be coming from elsewhere in New Zealand. After the first lecture, the Vice-Chancellor will host a dinner for Their Excellencies and other guests, to celebrate the memory of Miss de Carle.

The first lecture, entitled “Paul and the Subversive Power of the Unconditioned Gift”, will be held at 5.10 pm on Tuesday 30 March, in the Archway 1 Lecture Theatre, Union Street, Dunedin.
