Vigilant resident helps nab burglars
Hamilton Police are praising the vigilance of a resident in East street for helping them arrest two men who were caught committing a burglary of a house.
At about 5.30pm on Friday the 2nd April a resident saw two men walk into a property. The person thought they looked out of character for the elderly lady who lived there so they phoned police. A quick response by three patrol units led to police catching the men just as they had smashed and levered open a window.
“It was fortunate that the elderly lady who lived there was away but she could easily have been home. It was excellent decision making by the person who phoned us without delay and is an example of why neighbour support is essential, particularly at holiday times like this.
“What concerns me is that one of the men had hidden in his pack $550 in Australian currency, made up mostly of $50, $20 and $10 dollar notes neatly folded. The other man had $NZ130, a silver ‘Geneva’ watch, a gold ‘Citizen’ watch and a gold ‘Pierre Balsman” watch as well as burglary tools. We are very suspicious that this money and property will be from other burglaries or thefts. If this belongs to anyone they need to contact us.”
Two brothers aged 20 and 22 years will appear in the Hamilton District Court on the 3rd April charged with burglary.
