NORTH SHORE CITY

Police were called around midday today to a house in Simon Ellice Drive Glenfield.

A number of calls were received from neighbours and occupants of the house stating that a male family member at the address was damaging the house with a pole and damaging vehicles at the address.

On arrival at the scene, Police saw the male behaving irrationally and assaulting family members. He had set a fire inside the house and a further fire in the rear yard.

When Police staff approached the male he began spreading accelerant around the home and threw accelerant over Police. He then ran back inside the house.

The family members were safely removed from the house, and police cordoned off the address with the male inside. The Fire Service was in attendance at the scene.

A short time later the male came out of the address with the lighter in his hand and refused to put it down. When he had moved away from the accelerant a taser was deployed to safely effect the arrest of the male.

At this time the Fire Service were able to enter the family home and extinguish the fire. The home and vehicles are extensively damaged.

A 25 year old male has been arrested and is in Police custody. He will be facing a number of charges arising from the incident and will be appearing at North Shore District Court on Monday the 12th of April.
