Western Bay of Plenty Police are urgently seeking information from members of the public after a 65 year old woman was hit with a partially-full beer bottle thrown from a passing car on Saturday morning.

The woman was walking on Domain Road in Papamoa at approximately 8:20am when the incident happened.

The impact of the glass bottle left the woman with significant facial injuries. She remains in an induced coma in the intensive care unit at Tauranga Hospital.

"This was a senseless act that has resulted in an innocent woman suffering horrific injuries," says Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Turner, the officer in charge of investigating the incident.

"At this stage we have spoken to some witnesses who saw the incident, however, we urgently need further information from other members of the public. It may be someone who was in the area at the time, or someone who may have overheard people talking about it since.

"Every little piece of information will help us, so we're asking people to come forward if they have any information – regardless of how small or irrelevant they think it might be. People can also contact us anonymously through 0800 SPEAK UP."

Detective Senior Sergeant Turner says Police believe there were four people in the car that was involved in the incident.

Members of the public are asked to call the Tauranga Police Station on 07 577 4300, or anonymously on 0800 SPEAK UP.
