Western Bay of Plenty Police are appealing for an anonymous caller who may have vital information about a bottle attack in Papamoa on Sunday to come forward again.

The attack occurred on Sunday morning when a 65 year old woman was hit with a partially-full beer bottle thrown from a passing car. The woman was walking on Domain Road in Papamoa at approximately 8:20am when the incident happened.

The impact of the glass bottle left the woman with significant facial injuries. She remains in the intensive care unit at Tauranga Hospital.

Detective Sergeant Darryl Brazier, from the Tauranga CIB, says after significant publicity about the case, an anonymous caller contacted Tauranga Hospital to leave some information about potential suspects in the assault.

"We are very pleased that someone had enough of a conscience to try and help with this case, but we urgently need to clarify some of the information that person left," says Detective Sergeant Brazier.

"We are appealing for that person to contact us again and, if they wish, any information supplied can be treated with total confidence."

Detective Sergeant Brazier says he is asking the caller – or anyone else who may have information – to contact him directly through 07 577 4300, or on his cellphone, 027 494 5251.

"I would also like to appeal for the person who actually threw the bottle to come forward. By now they are probably aware of the terrible damage they have caused, and by coming forward now, they will go some way towards putting it right."

Police are also asking for any other witnesses to come forward with information.

If anyone has any further information, please contact Tauranga Police on 07 577 4300, or 0800 SPEAK UP.
