Dry Conditions Extending in Hawke's Bay

Hawke’s Bay Regional Council is concerned that combination of three months of dry conditions combined with the predicted seasonal winds means that river flows and low soil moisture levels in the region are likely to drop further.

 

Hawke’s Bay Regional Council is monitoring climate, water and soil conditions throughout the region and is in regular contact with local councils and agencies. The Council is very aware of the drought impacts currently hitting Waikato, South Taranaki and Northland. 

 

Hawke’s Bay Regional Council has already imposed bans on certain irrigation water takes in catchments in the Ruataniwha and Heretaunga plains areas.  There is concern that while short-term rain is forecast, dry conditions will continue through autumn.

 

The region has received only 20-30% of expected rainfall over the past few months and for the farmer, this means that they can expect compromised pasture growth leading into winter.  Newly sewn winter crops without irrigation may struggle to get established.  

 

Hawke’s Bay is getting dry with soil moisture levels well down and the soil temperature dropping with the seasonal shift toward winter.   Weather forecasts are indicating little relief in the short term.

 

There will be regular updates to landowners and the general public from the Council; in particular, to consent holders, who need to be aware of their consent conditions in regard to low flows and adjust their irrigation accordingly.
