One dead after crash - Wakapuaka, Nelson

Last night at 5.30pm Nelson Police attended a 2 vehicle head-on crash on State Highway 6, Wakapuaka, 6 kilometres north of Nelson.

The crash closed the state highway for 4 hours causing major traffic disruption as no alternative diversion routes were available.

Senior Sergeant Stu Koefoed of Nelson Police said "The crash occurred when one of the vehicles crossed the centreline on an easy bend colliding with an oncoming vehicle. Both vehicles were extensively damaged with all occupants having to be cut from their vehicles which took some time. The driver of the Nelson bound vehicle died in Nelson Hospital approximately 6 hours after the crash. Preliminary indications do not show speed or alcohol to be factors in this crash. The Coroner has been advised and we are continuing with enquiries into the crash."

Following next of kin being advised, police have named the deceased as Atapo King, a 73yr old female from Nelson.
