Construction of the Crown Road connector road is now underway with completion expected in October 2010 in conjunction with the completion of the East Taupo Arterial (ETA).

A long standing detour in this area has seen traffic diverted during the construction of the ETA however recent resource consent approvals mean the long awaited Crown Road deviation is now underway.

“It is good to see some action” says Mayor Rick Cooper. “The residents and businesses affected by the current Crown Road detour have been extremely understanding and patient, but now the end is in sight”.

The forming of this road had originally been planned as a long term project with a one way temporary road providing access from the ETA in the interim, however council approached NZTA, who approved the council funding application to bring forward the permanent solution. Once completed, Crown Road will exit onto State Highway 5 just below the ETA/SH5 roundabout.

Andrew McRae Fulton Hogan’s Project Manager says ‘We understand the importance of constructing this new section of road and expect to be able to deliver a completed Crown Road prior to the opening of the ETA.”

The temporary detour will remain in place in the mean time.
