A slip has closed the road between Queenstown and Glenorchy this morning.

The slip, which has fallen in an area known as the ‘narrows’ on the Glenorchy side of Bobs Cove, fell just before 9am this morning, Queenstown Lakes District Council infrastructure services general manager Mark Kunath said.

“We will get in there with a helicopter in the next few hours to have the slip assessed by geotechnical experts. That will give us a clear idea of what we are dealing with,” Mr Kunath said.

Once the slip was stable, diggers were positioned either side to commence clearing.

“It is a fairly significant slip (200 tonne) so we are flagging that the road is likely to be closed for 24-hours at this stage,” Mr Kunath said.

The Council was investigating a mode of transport for Glenorchy residents if required.
Affected residents should contact the Council for further information.
