The council is proposing to extend Miller St in Dannevirke after a duplication of RAPID numbers was found at the eastern end where it merges into Weber Rd.

Chief executive Blair King said the decision was based on maintaining an accurate numbering system to ensure reliability for emergency callouts.

The 734 meters extension meant that Miller St would now officially end at the Cowper Rd turnoff instead of by the Dannevirke sale yards.

The matter had come to the council’s attention when an ambulance officer had noted that two addresses were numbered as 111 Weber Rd, Mr King said.

Given that the intention of the RAPID numbering system was to help emergency services know what distance from a road’s start point they should travel to, there was “a high potential to end up being approximately 1 km short of the right property.”

The option of extending Miller St instead of renumbering the entire length of Weber Rd would have the least impact on residents and the council, he said.

The council is now contacting relevant property owners and will also be reviewing the current 100km/h speed for the extension.
