Kaipara District Council has reinforced its commitment to supporting development in the local community by opening its doors and open spaces to exhibitions of local artists’ work. “A FEAST FOR THE EYE” - Kaipara District Community Artwork Display will see local artists work exhibited in Council buildings for the next three months. Council has been working closely with local artists to develop the project which will provide greater exposure and local support for the artists.

Mayor Neil Tiller encourages members of the public to come into Council’s offices to view the exhibits. “Kaipara has an abundance of talented individuals and Council is committed to supporting the District’s artists through providing spaces in Council offices for the display of works to the public. The project is an opportunity for the community to explore and enjoy the variety of artworks on display.”

Council is committed to helping creative people living in Kaipara to obtain greater exposure for their work. In supporting the local artists it is anticipated that the artists’ profiles will increase having a positive effect on sales of their artwork. “We think there will be something of interest to everyone. With various art media being showcased including paintings, sculpture, jewellery and photography the community can find out more about our local artists and, if they like what they see, some of the art work will be available to purchase,” Mayor Tiller explained.

The project will see exhibitions by three artistic groups from Kaipara, with each exhibition lasting for a period of 6 weeks. The first exhibition, which features work by artists in the Mangawhai area opened on Monday 24 May.

Councillor Julia Sutherland, whose portfolio includes responsibility for the arts and has worked with Council staff on the project, is delighted to see the project reach fruition. “Art trails and exhibitions are a well established feature in Kaipara, occurring in Mangawhai and Dargaville several times a year. This project is a further excellent opportunity for the District’s many talented artists and crafts people to see their works displayed for others in the community to enjoy and admire. Council’s walls and spaces will be enhanced and the artists’ profiles raised. There is also the possibility of the art works on display being sold which is an added benefit to the artists. It’s a win-win situation for everyone”.
