Franklin District Council is throwing open the doors of the District’s new dog shelter at 15 Austen Place, Pukekohe, for one special day. The shelter (which will start business from 13th September) will be open from 10am – 2pm on 8th September for the public to have a chance to learn about the new facility, enjoy dog-show entertainment and maybe win free giveaways! There will be no dogs in the shelter during the open day.

“Over the last few years, as Franklin has grown, Franklin District Council staff, elected members and local residents have recognised the need for a bigger facility to meet the dog control needs of the District,” says Franklin District Council’s Regulatory Director, Peter Thom.

This new Dog Shelter has room for 40 dogs to be kept in individual kennels and will have one shelter keeper to ensure the safety of all dogs. The facility has also been designed to allow for further expansion in the future if necessary.

During the open day Franklin District Council will, from 10am – 12noon, be offering microchipping for the special discounted price of only $25 per dog! This special rate is only available during the open day so if you have ever thought about microchipping your animal this is a great opportunity. Please pre-book your interest in the microchipping service if possible by calling Franklin District Council on 237 1300.

Counties Manukau Dog Agility will be putting on dog agility and obedience displays from 10am – 12noon. At 12.30pm Dancing Dogs will be performing and following the official opening at 1pm the New Zealand Police Dog Section will display the talents of the canine side of the force.

“This is an opportunity for the community to learn more about an important Council service,” says Peter.

Council staff and their animal control contractor will also be on hand to answer questions on responsible dog ownership within the District.

You won’t need to worry about getting hungry - Pukekohe Scout troop will be holding a fundraising sausage sizzle to keep you going.
