Some Kerikeri residents may experience some discolouration of water coming from their taps tomorrow (Tuesday June 22) as the result of a pipe flushing exercise to clear the reticulation system of pockets of discoloured water.

A handful of complaints about discolouration have been received by the Far North District Council recently and partial flushing of the reticulation system has not fixed the problem.

Water and wastewater operations manager Jim Brooks suspects higher than usual concentrations of manganese in the raw water source may be causing the discolouration and while there is no risk to public health, the council wants to get on top of the problem.

“Flushing the pipes can stir the system up and may cause more temporary discolouration and possibly some reduction in pressure before the situation improves,” Mr Brooks said.

Households in central Kerikeri will be most affected by the effort to clear the pipes. There will be no impact on residents in Waipapa and Riverview.
