At about 10.15am on Sunday 4 July 2010 a Holden car collided with a Nissan car on SH1 350 metres north of Mangapai Rd, Oakleigh, near Whangärei.

The 28 year old male driver of the Holden car died at the crash scene. His 26 year old male passenger is in Whangärei Hospital with serious injuries.

The Nissan car occupants (female driver aged 63, and male passenger aged 59) were taken to Whangärei Hospital for treatment.

The road was closed for about 2 hours. Diversions were put in place.

The Northland Serious Crash Unit and Whangärei Police Staff are investigating the cause of the crash.

Initial indications are that speed and a wet road surface might be factors involved in the crash.

Whangärei Police are trying to identify the driver of a white bus that might have seen the crash happen.

The driver or passengers on that bus are urged to contact the Whangärei police on 09 430 4500

The death has been reported to the Northland Coroner.

The name of the deceased will not be released until next of kin have been notified.
