NORTH SHORE CITY

North Shore Police say an incident occurred about 4-30pm this afternoon where police were called to the suburb of Birkenhead to assist a taxi driver with a troublesome fare. The passenger was reasonably well built man, he remonstrated with the attending Constable and produced a liquor bottle as a weapon. The Officer deployed his O.C. Spray but it had no effect, the Officer then used his short baton to strike the offender, subduing him and he was able to be arrested. Shortly afterward the Police became concerned about the man’s health and an ambulance was called to the scene. The man was taken to Auckland Hospital where his condition is not thought to be serious and he is expected to be discharged later this evening”. It is likely he will face charges.
