Taupo Police are seeking assistance from the public following a serious assault that took place on Sunday morning, 1st August, at about 1:00am, outside the Burger King restaurant on Roberts Street , Taupo.

A 28 year old male victim was provoked, and set upon by a group of up to 12 youths.

The victim first had his takeaway meal taken from him, and when he confronted the thief, he was pushed from behind. He hit his head against a stone ledge, causing a cut to his ear which required several stitches. Others members of the offending group then took the opportunity to kick the victim, in a cowardly attack, while he was helplessly laying on the ground.

The group ran off into the carpark area behind Burger King.

The victim was transported to Taupo hospital by ambulance, where he was treated, and discharged about three hours later.

Police would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed this assault, or who may have been an innocent member of the group of youths. They can contact the Taupo Police on 07 3786060.

Police will be reviewing CCTV footage from Police cameras and Burger King cameras, and are hopeful of identifying those responsible.
