The disappearing white male doctor.

Are young, white, male doctors an endangered species? And if they are, does it matter?

The graduation group photo in the September issue of North & South doesn’t lie – white males are now in the minority in New Zealand medical schools.

This year, 49 per cent of students qualifying for entry interviews at Auckland School of Medicine were Asian or Indian. Less than 40 per cent were Pakeha. Women also outnumber men at our medical schools.

Is “the white male a goner” in medicine, as one Kiwi surgeon proclaims – or are our large, looming health needs in good hands? Find out in North & South, September issue on sale now.

Cheating death

Plus: North & South talks to four Kiwis who “came back from the dead”. As Surf Life Saving NZ marks its centenary, Donna Chisholm discovers how a group of survivors whose rescues made headlines for a day or two have fared after dramatically cheating death.

Also in the new issue of North & South – why can’t Kiwis “talk proper”? A generation ago, broadcasters spoke with BBC accents and carefully modulated vowels. Now, strong Kiwi accents are heard everywhere – from TV to airline announcements. But, Deborah Coddington argues, it’s no excuse for mangling words.

And – the rot has not stopped in New Zealand’s $6 billion leaky home disaster. North & South talks to the original whistleblower who’s still sounding warnings for home owners.

North & South September issue is on newsstands from August 16.
