CANTERBURY

The Warmup Cycling team is keen to consolidate its category two lead in this Sunday’s fourth round of the Benchmark Homes series in Canterbury.

The Canterbury based team currently lies seventh out of the eighteen teams, ahead of a number of category one teams, and has a three point lead over second placed category two team Mico-All About Plumbing.

Being focused on consistency has been a key factor in the first three rounds, Team Manager Kelly Chapman said.

“We only had five start the first few races so had to have all five finish which, even with some mechanical and other challenges, we achieved. We were also focused on looking after our only female Amanda Minty who picked up extra points in round two and three.”

Team regulars John McKenzie, Mike Crawford, Tom Molloy and David Roche will be joined by strong master’s cyclist Glenn Quantock, elite mountain biker Brent Miller and former professional rugby player Tom Simpson for the 140 kilometre course that features five sections and over eight kilometres of unsealed gravel roads. Minty is not racing due to a family commitment.

“The boys are up for it on Sunday. We know it will be tough and the gravel brings a whole different flavour to the race but we are focused on consolidating our team lead in category two and Mike (Crawford) has been racing and training well and should be in the mix at the end,” Chapman said.

Both Crawford and Miller are experienced elite level mountain bikers and this will prove a key factor when negotiating the gravel sections where the race is expected to break up.
