Lower Hutt Police are investigating an incident last night, where residents have reported what appear to be sounds of gunfire.

Detective Sergeant Mike Sears of the Lower Hutt CIB says just before midnight Police were called to an area near Cambridge Terrace and Hawkins Street, where they recovered some spent cartridges.

"Police are conducting a scene examination and doing an area canvas to talk to nearby residents about what they heard and saw last night."

Detective Sergeant Sears says there have not been any injuries or damage reported to Police.

"Police are interested in sightings of two vehicles around the same time last night. These include a white van and a white hatchback. These vehicles were seen leaving the Cambridge Terrace/Hawkins Street area at speed."

Anyone with any information should phone Lower Hutt Police immediately on either (04) 560 2600 or phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
