The Waihi Community Marae is hosting the 37th annual Hauraki Cultural Festival on the 29th and 30th of October, during the Go Waihi Goldfest.

“The aim of the festival is to foster and promote excellence in Maori performing arts, and is a great opportunity for the wider community to learn about the history and cultural values of the people of the Hauraki region“, said Waihi Community Marae Chairperson Tim Ainsley.

Well known actor and television personality Mabel Wharekawa Burt will be the MC for the two day event. Mabel has featured in movies the Whale Rider, In My Fathers Den, Crooked Earth and Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence. She also appeared on the Four Square TV advertisement and in Maori TV‘s ‘Ask your Auntie’ programme.

Hauraki Festival Coordinator Erika Warren says “The Waihi Community Marae is thrilled! She has agreed to be the host for what promises to be an exciting two days of entertainment and competition. Her humour, spontaneity and singing skills will add flavour and definitely spice up the event and keep the crowds entertained”.

Great food and local delicacies will be available, and stalls will add another dimension to the festival. Expressions of interest for a stall can be forwarded to Waihi Community Marae Chairperson Tim Ainsley by texting or phoning 027 292 696, or via email at tim.ainsley@sgs.com

Groups from throughout the Hauraki and beyond will be competing in junior, intermediate and senior categories. “This family friendly event is for every one of all cultures to come and enjoy a cultural feast of kapa haka performance, food and art. Be prepared for some real enjoyment”, said Erika.
