Save the Children is attempting to break the Guinness World Yo-Yo Record at the Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington tomorrow to help save children’s lives.

“Breaking the Guinness World Record will put New Zealand on the map not just for the challenge but also to demonstrate how collective action can help to save children’s lives. Every day 22,000 children around the world die before their 5th birthday from preventable causes like pneumonia, diarrhoea, malaria, measles and malnutrition. That’s one child every 3 seconds - it’s not just a tragedy it’s a scandal,” says Liz Gibbs, CEO of Save the Children New Zealand.

“Our appeal is about raising awareness and funds to help change this situation. The money raised with the appeal will help provide low-cost high-impact health care and nutrition, that quite simply will save children’s lives,” says Ms Gibbs.

“Save the Children has a limited edition yo-yo forthis year’s annual appeal which is available for a donation of $5. The money raised through our yo-yo sales will raise funds for the appeal and remind people that by doing just one simple thing – buying our yo-yo - they can they can make a difference. And to support children and families closer to home we will also donate $1 towards the Canterbury Earthquake Appeal,” says Ms Gibbs.

In Wellington, TV personality and comedian Te Radar will be the official MC for the World Yo-Yo Record attempt that is on at the Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington from midday to 1pm.

You can bring your own yo-yo or buy your Save the Children yo-yo for $5 at the event. Yo-yos are also available at www.do1thing.co.nz /play and by calling 0800 167 168 and at Save the Children shops throughout New Zealand and from Save the Children collectors.
