Relief has come to householders with no waste water service as Council installs temporary tanks on or outside their properties.

Tanks are being provided on berms or in the front of properties for houses without service and where pipes have been so badly damaged they cannot be repaired. The tanks are connected to the laterals from the house and the collected waste water is sucked from the tanks daily.

The tanks will allow householders to use their internal toilet, showers and washing machines.

City Water and Waste Manager Mark Christison says five crews are working on the project. There are currently 37 houses with tanks installed  and the goal is to try to get all of the  235 non-service households connected by mid-November.

“We are pleased to be able to offer a temporary solution to people who have been without waste water service since the quake. We believe this is the best and cleanest way to deal with the problem until restoration work is completed.

“We are prioritising on the basis of need and will get to everybody as soon as possible.’’

So far, a limited waster water service has been restored to 2518 properties since mid-September, Mr Christison says.
