There will be a new spot for youth campers at the lakes this Labour Weekend.

The Waitaki District Council is organising a separate fenced off youth campsite in the upper area of the Loch Laird Camping Reserve.

Community Safety Officer Helen Algar said “this is a proactive approach to issues that have occurred in the past. We will not be baby-sitting our youth. But rather giving them an opportunity to act responsibly in a safe environment”.

Initiatives aimed at reducing harm include keeping cars separate from tent sites, banning glass, providing temporary lighting and potable water.

Campers will be provided with information and checklists to ensure that they are prepared for the weekend.

The Waitaki Guardians will have a presence around Otematata and the camping reserves and Council staff will be present at the campsite.

Those intending to stay at the youth campsite will have to register beforehand. Tickets for the youth campsites are available from Council Customer Service. Tickets cost $30 per person for all three nights camping.

Unaccompanied, school age youth will not be welcome in other areas of the Waitaki District Council Lakes Camping Reserve over the Labour Weekend period.

A Liquor Ban will be in place in Otematata from Midnight Thursday until Midnight on Monday. Signage will be erected to show the area covered.
