PAPAKURA

Live music makes a welcome return to the Hawkins Theatre – Papakura this month in the form of the globetrotting, 12 piece Auckland based Batucada Sound Machine (BSM). Having just returned from a highly successful festival tour of Korea and a northern hemisphere summer tour of Europe, BSM drop in for one night in Papakura supported by Auckland based hip-hop newcomers Late Night Tigers.

Batucada Sound Machine began in 2003 when five drummers met, once a month, in a dimly lit nightclub in Auckland, New Zealand, to experiment fusing Brazilian batucada rhythms with Pacific soul and funk influences. Before long, a diverse group of talented musicians gravitated towards the infectious music and a band was formed. Since then, BSM has continued to experiment, not just with Brazilian, but also Cuban and Afro-beat rhythms, adding hip-hop, carefully crafted percussion, slick horns and soulful vocals. The result? BSM — a truly global sound like no other!

Word of mouth soon spread about their blistering live performances and before long BSM were billed at numerous well-respected events including Womad (UK/NZ), the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and seven of Australia’s biggest and most respected music and arts festivals which found them playing alongside global heavyweights such as Damien Marley, Ozomatli and The Spanish Harlem Orchestra.

After touring consistently to rave reviews, BSM were eager to get into the studio, and after a chance encounter at Womad UK with renowned world music producer Neil Sparkes (Transglobal Underground and Temple of Sound), a plan was hatched to bring him out to New Zealand and start recording. Mixed at the legendary Avatar Studios in New York City, BSM’s debut studio album “Rhythm & Rhyme” quickly climbed to the top of the Independent NZ Music charts and earned the band recent invitations to play at Porto Musical Brazil, Glastonbury and The Australasian World Music Expo. This critical success is all the more sweet, given that the overriding, uniting factor within the band is their deep love and respect for music.

The future looks bright as BSM prepares to release their second album into Australia and start work on recording their third. At the same time BSM is looking forward to performing at the Hawkins Theatre- Papakura and getting the audience to jump, dance and stamp their feet screaming for more!

Batucada Sound Machine will be playing the Hawkins Theatre – Papakura on Friday 29th October at 7.30pm
