SOUTHLAND

Subway-Avanti Pro Cycling’s Joe Cooper has recorded one of the largest winning margins in the Powernet Tour of Southland’s King of the Mountain competition.

Cooper, riding a specially designed KOM red polka dot Avanti bike, built an unassailable lead in the climber’s competition yesterday, but added more six points to take his tally to 52 points and further increase his lead over Alex Meenhorst of Team SVS to 24 points.

“It really has been a great week. We needed to overcome the challenges caused from the bad crash on the first day, so we rallied as a team and refocused on the KOM jersey so it feels great to win it so convincing.”

Hayden Roulston from the Calder Stewart Bike NZ National team won his fourth Powernet Tour of Southland title, holding onto the yellow jersey he won on this morning exciting stage from Te Anau to Lumsden crossing the finish line in Invercargill with a four second lead over his Commonwealth Games team mate Jack Bauer.
