Far North District Council Deputy Mayor Laurie Byers today signalled his intention to seek council support to commence negotiations to renew the Kerikeri Rugby Club’s lease of the Kerikeri Domain for two years.

Cr Byers tabled a Notice of Motion that he intended to move the following resolutions at the September 27 council meeting.

“That the following resolution of council dated 12 October 2006 be rescinded:

‘Council confirm the Kerikeri Rugby Club lease of the Kerikeri Domain not be renewed from 2007, but until the Kerikeri sports facility fields are available, the Kerikeri Rugby Club may continue to use the Kerikeri Domain.”

And further

“That because the Kerikeri Domain redevelopment consultation showed a marked preference from the community to maintain the status quo with respect to green space, that the Community Services Manager be delegated authority to negotiate a renewal of the Kerikeri Domain lease with the Kerikeri Rugby Club for a period of two years.”

In moving the resolutions – signed by Crs Brian Thorburn, Garry Weeds, Tom Baker and Ann Court, Cr Byers said the council needed to guarantee that the rugby club could continue to occupy the Domain for two years so that the club had security of tenure until the sportsfields at the Bay of Islands sports complex were completed and fully functioning.
