Invercargill Airport Ltd has appointed Gordon Johnstone as its new General Manager, Airport Chairman Merv Cook announced today.

Mr Johnstone, who was born in Southland, has broad career experience that spans a variety of organisations in the public and private sectors, both nationally and internationally.

Currently Financial Controller of Cairns Hardware Company, he has experience working in a Queensland regional airline company, in contract work and as the Financial Controller for a wide variety of organisations.

Throughout his career Mr Johnstone has been involved in tourism operations, duty free shop tender bids, supermarket takeovers and spent eight years in public infrastructure establishment and redevelopment.  This included the planning, fit out and opening of the Cairns Convention centre from 1994 to 2000, the Malaysian Convention Centre Review, Hong Kong National Stadium Feasibility, Gabba Redevelopment Study, Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre and Capital Theatre Redevelopment.

With qualifications in commerce, management, business administration and human resource management, he is also a Justice of the Peace.

The former Radio Sport Reporter, Rugby Columnist and KPMG Peat Marwick Auditor has also been a Rugby Union Referee, held various administrative positions in Basketball, including as a Board Member of Basketball Queensland and was  a member of the Jaycees.

Mr Johnstone is returning to Southland to be with his partner, who lives in Invercargill.

While most of his career has been as a Financial Controller or Chief Financial Officer, Mr Johnstone does not consider himself to be a typical accountant and says he is looking forward to the challenge of leading Invercargill Airport Ltd.

Invercargill Airport Chairman Merv Cook said he was delighted to appoint someone of Mr Johnstone’s skill and wide ranging experience to the position of General Manager.

“This is a key position for the future of our province and I look forward to seeing Gordon make his mark,” he said.
