Council Opens Pike River Condolence Book

Wellington City Council is inviting members of the public to sign a condolence book for the loved ones of the men who died in the Pike River coal mine.

Mayor Celia Wade-Brown said she wants to pass on to the people of Greymouth and the surrounding district that they are in the thoughts and prayers of the people of Wellington.

The pages will be available for messages in the foyer of the main Council building in Wakefield Street from Monday until Christmas, after which they will be bound into a book to be sent to Greymouth.

"Our heartfelt sympathies go out to the friends and families - the parents, wives, girlfriends, children and siblings - of the 29 men who lost their lives," Mayor Wade-Brown said.

The Pike River Official Remembrance Service will be held in Greymouth next Thursday, 2 December.
