Taupo and its wider community can expect to see a stronger police presence this summer, with more officers in the CBD, on the roads and patrolling neighbourhoods and waterways.

The Summer Policing period officially kicks off this weekend with a focus on ensuring people enjoy the holiday period with a reduction in crime and crash offences across the Taupo Police area.

Senior Sergeant Tony Jeurissen says Police are well prepared for the festive season.

"It's business as usual for us every year. We plan to be busy during this period and we have the people and resources in place to manage it. We simply get on with the job that needs to be done," he says.

Senior Sergeant Jeurissen says Police will be reinforcing liquor bans, breath testing all motorists who are pulled over, while also focussing on family violence.

He says across the board Police will be taking a no tolerance approach to these types of offending.

People are also being reminded to take some key steps to keep themselves and their property safe by making sure doors and windows are locked, valuables are kept out if sight and keeping in touch with neighbours.

"It's simple, see something, say something," says Senior Sergeant Jeurissen.

He says the Taupo area is a safe and friendly place to celebrate summer and the festive season for families and children and Police want to see people enjoying the summer period safely and responsibly.

If members of the public are concerned at any time, be it over suspicious activity, dangerous driving or disorderly behaviour, they should contact Police, either by dialling 111 or by calling the local Police Station.
