Wellington Police are investigating the death of a teenager, which occurred in Khandallah shortly after 7pm last night.

Detective Senior Sergeant Donna Howard of the Wellington CIB says a Kiwi Rail locomotive engineer discovered the teenager beside the railway tracks close to Rangoon Street in Khandallah.

"The locomotive engineer put on the emergency brakes of the train and went to the assistance of the teenager. Emergency services were then contacted by Kiwi Rail."

DSS Howard says the locomotive engineer performed CPR on the teenager, however the person died at the scene.

"Police would like to thank Kiwi Rail and the locomotive engineer whose actions last night were commendable."

A post-mortem examination will be carried out later today. Police are not releasing the name of the teenager until all next of kin have been advised.

Police are not seeking anyone else in relation to this death but would like to hear from anyone who may have seen a young male in the Rangoon Street area between 6:30pm and 7:30pm last night.
