TAUPO

Taupo Police staff were out in force last weekend with the launch of the summer policing period.

The booze bus returned to Taupo for the weekend and stopped 2642 vehicles.

Nine people were reported as driving with excess breath alcohol.

Sergeant Greg Weston says police made 17 arrests over the weekend for offences of; robbery, common assault, disorderly behaviour, detox and aggravated assault and theft.

Sergeant Weston says offenders have been apprehended for both the robbery and aggravated assault and theft incidents.

Police also paid a visit to a number of Taupo's licensed premises, though no offences were reported.

Sergeant Weston says the public can expect to see a greater police presence throughout the summer with more police, on the roads, in the CBD and patrolling parks and reserves.

"The summer policing programme focuses on ensuring people enjoy the holiday period with a reduction in crime and crash offences across the Taupo area," he says.

Residents and visitors alike are reminded that Police will be reinforcing liquor bans, breath testing all motorists who are pulled over while also focussing on family violence throughout the summer.

If members of the public are concerned at any time, be it over suspicious activity, dangerous driving or disorderly behaviour, they should contact Police, either by dialling 111 or by calling the local Police Station.

Any criminal activity can also be forwarded through to Crimestoppers on 0800 555111
