Hot, dry summer days have seen water use skyrocket and water shortages are now becoming a reality in the Taupo District with Council stressing everyone must start conserving water right now.

Group Manager Infrastructure & Parks, Ted Anderson is asking everyone to adopt the alternate day system for watering their gardens immediately, this requires even numbered properties to water on even days and odd numbered properties on odd days.

Mr Anderson says “the issue is becoming critical in our district, particularly in Acacia Bay, Whakamoenga Point, properties on Mapara Road and connecting roads that are on the Mapara supply where water demand is at unsustainable levels.

He says, “while we all like to look after our lawns and gardens in these dry conditions it is critical that residential properties limit irrigation as much as possible. Living by a large lake doesn’t make us immune to water shortages and we, like the rest of country, must take pro-active measures to conserve what we have and abide by our Resource Consent water take allowances. We must recognise that farms in the area that are connected to the Mapara Road supply require stock water.  Farm animals must take priority over irrigation of gardens and lawns.”

He says “please only water on alternate days and during the early morning or at night.  Watering during the heat of the day is simply a waste of water!”

All other water conservation measures such as turning off the tap while you are brushing your teeth, fixing any dripping taps, not running water from your hot taps while you wait for the hot water to come through,  having showers instead of baths and keeping showers to a minimum time should also be implemented.
