BAY OF PLENTY

The rain meant there were fewer than normal people on the streets and in vehicles.

In a joint Police and Health operation, Police stopped 746 vehicles at checkpoints throughout the city and 5 people were processed for drink driving.

23 arrests were made, mostly in the Tauranga CBD for alcohol-related violence and disorder.
Of those 23 arrests, 7 were for breaching the Liquor Ban, and 2 young people were dealt with by way of Liquor Infringement Notices.

A controlled purchase operation was also carried out. A 15 year old female volunteer attempted to purchase alcohol at 8 off-licence premises and was sold a 6 pack of RTD's at one Mt Maunganui premises. The 15 year old girl also purchased alcohol from a bar in Mt Maunganui.

Police were disappointed that licensed premises were not checking identification before selling alcohol to anyone appearing underage. Police will be following up with the 2 licensed premises who sold to the underage girl.

Inspector WRIGHT-ST CLAIR said "The harm from alcohol-related violence and disorder would continue to be a focus for WBOP Police." He said "This is a community issue and requires a whole community approach to make a difference."

At least 33% of all police recorded offences in 2008/2009 were committed by offenders who had consumed alcohol prior to committing offences. Drink driving is involved in 50% of fatal motor accidents in the WBOP.
