Taupō district council is urging everyone out on the water this summer to be sensible and be alert to the dangers

Summertime is when kiwis flock to the water but it’s all too easy for accidents to occur, one lapse of concentration and fatal accidents and drownings in our lakes and rivers can turn happy memories into tragedies.

Lake Taupō Harbourmaster Phillip King says the lake is extremely busy at this time of the year and people need to be aware of some simple rules to keep themselves and their passengers safe. “First and foremost if you are out on the lake in your boat, its compulsory to have lifejackets for everyone onboard and I highly recommend wearing yours, it may save your life.”

Mr King says its also critical to have two forms of communication, firstly a VHF radio (tuned into Channel 61 on Lake Taupō), and also a mobile phone stored in a waterproof bag.

He says “all skippers should be aware of the weather and regularly check the maritime marine report. They are also responsible for anyone being towed on skis or inflatables so must make sure the spotter keeps a close eye on them. Finally they must not speed anywhere near shore. The speed limit within 200 metres of shore is 5 knots.”

Taupō District Council manager John Ridd says caution in and around our rivers is also extremely important. “Rivers can often be deceiving with currents much stronger than expected and even strong swimmers can get into trouble. Rivers also contain hidden threats such as submerged logs that can cause injuries or vegetation that people get tangled in.”

He says the signage around Spa Park has been upgraded to alert people to the risks. “Spa Park is one of our most beautiful and popular destinations, particularly at the hot pool area, but swift currents just a bit further out can get people into trouble and I urge everyone to take care around water and also look after your mates this summer.”
