One of New Zealand’s most highly respected scientists, Sir Paul Callaghan, has been named the Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year 2011.

For over 30 years Sir Paul, 63, has shown outstanding leadership as a scientist, teacher and communicator, particularly in the fields of nanotechnology and magnetic resonance.

Sir Paul was selected from a shortlist of exceptional Kiwis, including finalists Peri Drysdale, internationally recognised sustainable business leader and philanthropist, and Stephen Boxer, founder of the MYND (Male Youth New Direction) programme for serious youth offenders in South Auckland.

Awards patron Jim Bolger said, “Sir Paul Callaghan has done so much to raise the profile of New Zealand as a leader in the field of science. His commitment in connecting science, technology and business for the positive economic development of New Zealand is inspirational and encourages others to also make a difference.”

Thanking his fellow nominees and accepting his award, Sir Paul said, "I am humbled and honoured to receive this award, especially when there are thousands of people who are making enormous contributions to New Zealand every day. I've been fortunate enough to work in a field and country that I love. My hope is to make science and innovation a core part of our country's future and to encourage more talented young New Zealanders to take every opportunity they can.”

Another four inspirational Kiwis were honoured in other categories at the awards presentation held in Auckland this evening:

Alison Neill, 78, from Fairlie, South Canterbury, named the Countdown Senior New Zealander of the Year for providing over 30 years of voluntary care to the elderly.

Jamie Fenton, 17, from New Plymouth, named the Coca-Cola Amatil Young New Zealander of the Year for her work as a young inventor and inspirational role model to Kiwi kids.

Billy Graham from Naenae, Lower Hutt, given the Kiwibank Local Heroes Award for his extraordinary work creating programmes for at-risk youth.

The Gibbston Community Association, Central Otago, given the Mitre 10 Community of the Year Award for their outstanding community development achievements.

The Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year Awards honour the contributions of remarkable individuals, organisations and community groups throughout New Zealand who inspire us through their commitment, hard work and achievement.

Last year’s Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year winner was inventor, scientist and humanitarian, Sir Ray Avery.

The five award winners were announced from a list of three finalists in each category. Each winner received a handcrafted New Zealand made trophy and $5,000 towards their work from principal sponsor Kiwibank.
