WELLINGTON CITY

Isolated acts of stupidity and severely intoxicated young women have kept Wellington Police busy throughout day two of the NZI Sevens.

A total of 28 people have been arrested at the stadium today, for a variety of offences including disorder, offensive behaviour and pitch invading. A further 40 people were evicted.

Yesterday on day one, 16 were arrested at the stadium, and 76 evicted, with a further 18 people arrested in the central city overnight.

Sevens Operation Commander Senior Sergeant Simon Feltham says the number of extremely intoxicated young women, between the ages of 18 to 25 years, made up around 90 per cent of those in the Chill Out Zones today who required medical attention.

"It is of huge concern to Police that so many young women have today become so intoxicated they have been unable to take any kind of responsibility for themselves."

He says this is a message Police continue to repeat over and over again, and sadly it has fallen on deaf ears this weekend.

"It appears that a large amount of alcohol was consumed by Sevens fans prior to arrival at the stadium and the effects of this pre-loading only became apparent hours later."

Police were also kept busy today dealing with a few isolated acts of stupidity. These included a pitch invader who, when caught, was found to have an LSD tab in his pocket.

Senior Sergeant Feltham says, "A 23 year old woman was evicted from the stadium and then jumped on the back of a security guard and assaulted him, before being arrested."

Police now face a busy night ahead of them, as thousands of Sevens fans head to the central city to continue to celebrate New Zealand's win against England 29 - 14.
