TAUPO

A 17 year old male underwent surgery at Rotorua Hospital today after receiving a gunshot wound to his lower abdomen in an incident in Taupo yesterday evening .

Police are questioning one person in connection with the incident, and have identified further suspects.

The Taupo Police Area Commander, Inspector Steve Bullock, says the 17 year old was walking to local shops in Taharepa Road with another male at approximately 6:30pm last night, when a car drove past, firing one shot.

"The slug hit the 17 year old in his lower abdomen area, lodging in his upper leg. He was operated on at Rotorua Hospital today. His injuries were not life-threatening and no further injuries were sustained by him or his companion."

Inspector Bullock says Police were quickly at the scene and have spoken to a number of witnesses, including the victim who was able to speak to Police last night.

He says one of the occupants of the car was taken into Police custody for questioning overnight.

Inspector Bullock says it is not yet clear what prompted the incident, but Police believe the offenders were known to the victim.

"It certainly does not appear to have been a random incident, and local residents should feel reassured that this is the case. At the same time, we are extremely fortunate that no innocent member of the public was harmed.

"This was a serious incident, warranting an urgent response. Police have responded quickly and we will be working hard to ensure that those responsible are apprehended and are held accountable for their actions."

Inspector Bullock says Police would like to hear from anyone who may have been in the Taharepa Rd area last night between 6pm and 7pm. Please contact the Taupo Police Station, or contact the anonymous Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111.
