Kairanga fundraiser successful

A VILLAGE paddock party at Kairanga on Saturday raised more than $5000 for the Christchurch quake relief fund, with further pledges still rolling in.

A modified decision by the Kairanga Community Centre committee to send proceeds from the scheduled party to Christchurch drew instant community support with more than 300 people (double the expected number) attending the event at Kairanga School.

The fundraiser originally aimed to raise money for the Kairanga Hall.

Committee Chair, Hamish Lowe, was delighted with the result and praised the efforts of the organising team for their extra preparations.

He said those who attended were keen to relax and meet other “locals” and in view of what happened in Christchurch it did highlight the need to get to know neighbours a bit more.

In the meantime, more than $1000 has so far been collected at the Manawatu District Council office for the relief fund.
