Staff at New Plymouth District Council will be stepping out in support of World Car-Free Day this Friday (21 September).
Workers at all of the council’s sites – as well as at Powerco, which is based in the Civic Centre – are being encouraged to walk, cycle, bus or car-pool to and from work this Friday as part of a worldwide effort to get people out of their cars for one day.
“We think this is a good project for the council to get behind,” says Assistant Chief Executive Frank Versteeg.
“The council has put a lot of work into alternative transport options, such as updating its Cycle Strategy and planning developments of cycle networks.
“We are also part of the Communities for Climate Protection programme – a nationwide government initiative – with the goal of reducing the amount of greenhouse gasses produced in the district.
“Supporting World Car-Free Day fits neatly into both of these projects.”
Mr Versteeg hopes other businesses will encourage their staff members to take part in World Car-Free Day as well.
As part of the worldwide event Taranaki Regional Council is holding Free Bus Days for the South Taranaki once-a-week services on Thursday and Friday, and for the New Plymouth urban routes this Friday, during which all adults will be able to ride on those buses system for free.
